The Detroit Lions have spent the offseason searching for ways to improve their pass rush, but so far, answers remain elusive. With free agency’s top options already scooped up, speculation is swirling around potential draft selections. However, a recent trade proposal suggests an unexpected alternative, one that could bring a former Super Bowl champion to Detroit.

Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton has pitched a trade scenario in which the Lions acquire Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher Bryce Huff in exchange for a fourth-round pick and a seventh-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft. While the move would inject talent into Detroit’s defensive front, it carries significant risk given Huff’s recent performance and hefty contract.

A High-Stakes Gamble On Huff?

Huff shined in 2023 with the New York Jets, tallying 10 sacks in a breakout season before signing a three-year, $51 million contract with the Eagles. However, his production took a sharp dip last season, managing just two sacks and 20 pressures over 12 games, ranking him 102nd and 87th among edge rushers, respectively, per Pro Football Focus.

Detroit has so far refrained from making major financial commitments to pass rushers with inconsistent track records, opting instead for strategic value in free agency. That cautious approach makes a trade for Huff seem unlikely, especially given his one-year peak in an otherwise modest career.

Still, the Detroit Lions’ front office, led by GM Brad Holmes, has been clear about their intent to reinforce the edge. While Huff’s contract and production concerns may scare Detroit, his past success and potential upside could tempt them into rolling the dice, especially if Philadelphia is willing to absorb part of his contract.

The Detroit Lions are bound to move on the edge soon, but whether that move involves Bryce Huff remains a long shot. For now, the draft appears to be their most likely avenue for bolstering the pass rush, but in an offseason full of surprises, anything is possible.
