Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III hasn’t worked for ESPN since he was suddenly fired late last year.
Now, it appears he is taking shots at them and a former co-worker.
After the Department of Defense had taken down and then eventually re-added an online feature about Jackie Robinson’s military service, Mina Kimes decided to give her thoughts on the matter.
During an appearance on ESPN’s “Around the Horn” on Wednesday, Kimes said in part, “Jackie Robinson was known for many things. But above all, first and foremost, it was his ongoing courage in the face of racial discrimination.”
“In fact, in addition to crossing the color barrier in baseball, he served in a segregated unit in the Army and, in one instance, refused to move to the back of the bus, was arrested and acquitted. That matters. That history can be erased, it cannot be undone, and it must be recognized to fully understand and celebrate his legacy.”
Her former ESPN colleague, Robert Griffin III, soon took to his X account, formerly Twitter, to state that sports shows should be about sports.
“Sports shows on TV should be about sports, not politics,” the former NFL quarterback wrote.
In a follow-up post, Griffin added: “His significance can never and should never be erased. Breaking the color barrier in baseball in itself is not political. Jesse Owens winning 4 Gold Medals in itself was not political. Jack Johnson becoming the 1st Black Boxing Heavyweight Champ in itself was not political. They all had political ramifications. They all challenged the status quo of racial barriers to fair play, race relations, and civil rights. That should always be acknowledged and never forgotten. They shouldn’t be used as an excuse to push political agendas on sports shows on national television to an audience there to consume sports content.”
Many fans took what he said and started to believe that Griffin III was suddenly switching his political affiliation and heading towards being a conservative influencer later this year.
“He hasn’t been able to get a gig on tv for a while so he’s going for the easiest thing which is grifting,” one fan said.
“This type of tweet is often followed by a guest appearance on OutKick within a few months,” another fan replied.
“Fox and friends new bro,” a third fan stated.
“That conservative grift pays better,” another person said of Robert Griffin trying to position himself to make money on the other side.
One final person added: “Maybe all his tweets about ‘this is a safe space’ was him keeping track of the comments to see which side he should align himself with.”

When it comes to politics, Robert Griffin III thinks sports TV shows should stick to sports.
He shocked everyone by basically calling out his former employer on it.
Taking to X on Thursday, the former NFL quarterback expressed that belief, stating, “Sports shows on TV should be about sports, not politics.”
Back in August 2024, ESPN fired him just days after he publicly defended the Seminoles, who faced criticism for expressing their feelings about being left out of the 2023 College Football Playoff.
He has been out of work ever since.
