BBC Radio 2 host Vernon Kay has disclosed to listeners how he discovered a remedy for a lesser-known medical condition that affects almost one in ten people.

The 51-year-old broadcaster was presenting his regular morning programme when he revealed that he had purchased a new set of shoe insoles to tackle a health complaint that had troubled him for years.

During Wednesday’s show (September 17), he opened up about how the issue presents itself: “I’ve got Morton’s neuroma in my left foot, and it’s a nerve issue. So I can’t feel three or four of my toes.”

Detailing how he managed to ease the agonising condition, he added: “So what I did was, I bought some proper insoles. I actually did some research. I bought elevated-arched insoles and the pain has disappeared, the pain has vanished. It hasn’t cured it, but the pain doesn’t come as regularly as it has done in the past. I’m well happy.”

He then playfully added: “Check your insoles if you’re going raving and misbehaving.”

The NHS characterises the ailment as: “Morton’s neuroma is where there’s a thickening of tissue around a nerve in your foot that’s been irritated or damaged. The symptoms can often be eased with treatments you can try yourself.”

While Vernon experimented with his own solution, the NHS has also outlined several additional approaches to help alleviate the discomfort, including: “Rest and raise your foot when you can; take ibuprofen or paracetamol; try to lose weight if you’re overweight; and avoid or reduce impact activities such as running and jumping.”

It comes after Vernon revealed that the death of Manchester boxing legend Ricky Hatton “hit” him hard.

Ricky died at the age of 46, sparking an outpouring of grief. Vernon said: “Yeah, I haven’t mentioned that, the passing of Ricky Hatton this morning, because it’s a tough one for many people.

“And from my personal experience of meeting him, in personal and entertaining environments, at parties and social gatherings and stuff, Ricky was always, always, the one who had a conversation with you, but he knew you, he knew what you were up to.

“When I saw the news, it hit me because he was such a lovely bloke and all the tributes that I’ve read all just say exactly the same thing.”

Vernon’s career has flourished in recent years after taking over from broadcasting legend Ken Bruce on his BBC Radio 2 mid-morning programme in 2023.

His breakthrough came when he began presenting T4 in 2000, and he also hosted All Star Family Fortunes from 2006 to 2015.

He’s due to return to ITV’s M&S Dress the Nation alongside co-presenter AJ Odudu, while Loose Women favourite Frankie Bridge will appear as a guest judge this weekend.

The previous series featured celebrity appearances from stars including Mel B, Vogue Williams and Alex Scott. M&S: Dress the Nation will air on ITV at 6.55pm tonight (Sunday, 21 September).
