‘He recited something that was lovely and then he got down on one knee’

Davina McCall has revealed that she IS engaged to her long-term partner, celebrity hairdresser Michael Douglas.

Long Lost Family star Davina, 57, and Michael, 52, have been together since 2018. And, speaking earlier today (September 17), Davina confirmed that Michael had “got down on one knee” during a romantic clifftop proposal in Ibiza.

Earlier this month, a source told The Sun Davina and Michael had got engaged over the summer after seven years together. They then reportedly jetted off to the Burning Man festival in the US to celebrate.

The couple first got together in 2018 following Davina’s divorce from her second husband, Matthew Robertson, with whom she shares three children. They moved in together in 2023 and are now taking a huge next step in their relationship.

The engagement news comes just months after Davina underwent a life-saving operation to remove a benign cyst from her brain.

The source said: “To say it has been a rollercoaster year for her is an understatement. Whilst surgery was, of course, traumatic, she made peace with a lot in the days and weeks leading up to it. Then, having survived, she had a new lease of life — as so many do who have been in similar situations.

“Michael was her absolute rock throughout her recovery. If you see them together, genuinely, they are like lovesick teenagers. Their chemistry is insane. Basically, Davina thought ‘[bleep] it, life is short’, and decided it was time to, as the kids say, lock in the love of her life.”

According to the publication, no date has been set for the wedding. However, it’s expected it won’t be until after May 2026, when Davina is recovered from her brain operation. The star previously revealed it could take up to 12-18 months for her to fully recover.

Details of Michael’s proposal shared

Davina has now spoken to Chris Evans on Virgin Radio about Michael’s proposal, revealing it happened at the end of July.

“I’m getting married!” she cheered.

Davina then shared more details: “It happened in Ibiza. What was quite funny was after lunch – Michael had booked a lunch which was like, not that usual on a beach and he wanted to take me to a beach where we’d been with all the kids before. So I was like: ‘Oh, this is really nice.’

“And then he said: ‘Let’s go for a walk around the cliffs.’ Now I’m in Ibiza right? When I’m in Ibiza, I dress for Ibiza, Chris. I’m in some god-forsaken cowboy boot, little pink cowboy boots with steel toe caps and I’m not in a cliff climbing outfit.

“But I could see he really wanted me to like it, it would make him happy. And I thought, oh, bless. Like, he wants to show me something beautiful.”

‘And then he got down on one knee’

Revealing she almost ruined his big moment, Davina continued: “So I was like, stop being miserable and get up the cliff. So I’m clambering up the cliff in some sort of steel toe-capped cowboy boots. I’m not going to say what happened, but he recited something to me which was lovely. Because I’m going to keep something for myself. He recited something that was lovely and then he got down on one knee.

“But what was quite funny is he’d spent the year before getting down on one knee and tying a pretend shoelace. So I’d go: ‘Oh my gosh, he’s proposing’.’ And then he’d tie a pretend shoelace and I go: ‘Ah!” So after four or five of those, it just became an in joke. So when he did get down on one knee… he’s a very clever guy and very funny. I’m so lucky.”

Marriage U-turn

The ‘engagement’ news comes just weeks after Davina seemed to suggest that they wouldn’t be getting married.

“We go on honeymoons all the time but without getting married. We’re in the honeymoon period even after all these years. I couldn’t be more happy. And sometimes there’s an idea of, why change anything?’” she said.

In another interview, she told Michael that he was her “soulmate”.

“I want to just big up Michael for a minute, because you and I have been through something mega, and I want to say out loud, just thank you. It’s been really difficult for both of us, and I love you with all of my heart. You are everything to me, you’re my soulmate,” she said.

“We are more than married!”
