In the high-speed world of Formula 1, where every millisecond and every decision can mean the difference between glory and failure, the behind-the-scenes drama often holds more surprises than the races themselves. Recently, the startling delay in George Russell’s contract renewal with the Mercedes team has become a focal point of attention, sparking a wave of speculation and concern among fans and experts alike. Though things may appear calm on the surface, a silent battle is unfolding within Mercedes, involving money, contract length, and, most significantly, the colossal shadows of Max Verstappen and the prodigious Kimi Antonelli.

Verstappen’s Shadow and Russell’s Quest for Flexibility
For years, Mercedes has been chasing Red Bull, and then McLaren, in the race for the top spot. Now, they are betting everything on the new 2026 regulations. James Allison and his technical team cut development on the 2025 car early, shifting their full attention to a package many believe will produce the most powerful new power unit on the grid. On paper, this is the foundation for a spectacular Mercedes comeback. However, amidst this promising picture, one anomaly stands out: Russell’s new contract remains unsigned. The team has insisted both he and rising star Kimi Antonelli will be on the grid in 2026, yet weeks of silence suggest deeper sticking points.
At first, whispers in the paddock pointed to Russell wanting to trim his PR and marketing commitments. However, insiders believe the holdup goes far beyond media duties, centering on two much bigger factors: money and contract length. For the past two seasons, Russell has been driving like a top-tier star, and he wants his paycheck to reflect that. Then there’s the question of duration. Normally, a renewal of this magnitude would run for two years, securing both driver and team through 2027. But in Baku, speculation surfaced about a possible “one-plus-one” deal, where either side could walk away after just one season.
This option opens up several intriguing possibilities. From Mercedes’s perspective, it could be about leaving the door open for Max Verstappen, should he decide to walk away from Red Bull. The two sides have flirted for years, and although Verstappen has publicly committed to Red Bull for 2026, few in the paddock believe the saga is truly over. On the flip side, Russell himself may be pushing for flexibility. Since joining Mercedes, he’s never had a championship-winning car. With his stock rising, he might prefer to keep his options open, waiting to see if Mercedes’s 2026 gamble pays off before locking himself in long-term.
Mercedes often highlights that Russell is tied to them through a management contract, a legacy of their investment in his junior career. But that arrangement doesn’t legally bind him to drive for their team. If Russell decided to leave after 2025, Mercedes would face the awkward task of negotiating on his behalf with a rival squad, essentially helping a competitor secure their lead driver. Publicly, Mercedes insists there’s nothing to worry about; Russell will be there next year, no questions asked. Yet, the longer the silence stretches, the clearer it becomes that money, trust, and strategy are all in play. Whether it’s Mercedes hedging for Verstappen or Russell hedging his own bets, the next few months will decide whether this partnership is built on long-term commitment or just a fragile convenience.
Journalist Julian Kerousi has shed more light on how Russell really feels about committing to Mercedes for 2026 and beyond. Throughout the season, Mercedes has been consistently linked with Max Verstappen. Officially, Verstappen is locked into Red Bull until the end of 2028, but in Formula 1, no contract is ever bulletproof, and plenty doubt he’ll stay the course that long. Speaking on the “Nailing the Apex” podcast, Sarasoli explained Russell’s hesitation. She revealed that the uncertainty surrounding Verstappen’s long-term future is weighing heavily on Russell’s mind. From his perspective, signing a lengthy contract with Mercedes could leave him vulnerable if Verstappen suddenly became available and Mercedes decided to reshuffle their lineup.
It’s not just about money or the length of the deal; it’s about security. Russell wants more than just words; he wants firm reassurance from Toto Wolff that he won’t be cast aside if the Verstappen sweepstakes open up. This makes Russell’s stance much clearer: he’s proven his value, he’s performed under pressure, and now he wants Mercedes to show that same faith in him before he commits his future to Brackley.
Kerousi mentioned she asked Russell directly about his contract issues. While next year’s contract is sorted, the big question is what happens when Max Verstappen becomes available. There will undoubtedly be a clause in Russell’s contract stating that if Max is available, he will be the first to know and can negotiate because he’s “out”. Russell has to think about 2027 and 2028. His contract isn’t just for next year; it’s about what happens when another driver, namely Max Verstappen, is available.
Kerousi believes Russell wants some reassurance that he won’t be the one to leave Mercedes if and when that happens. However, we all know Toto Wolff is super connected with Kimi Antonelli, whom he considers his “golden child”. Wolff wants to make Kimi a great driver, and his dream would be to have Max, the driver he lost to Helmut Marko, and Kimi on the same team. Thus, Wolff is not in a very good position to negotiate anything.

The Rise of Kimi Antonelli: Toto Wolff’s “Golden Child”
While Russell’s future hangs in the balance, another name is shining brightly, adding more pressure to the negotiating table at Mercedes: Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Toto Wolff has delivered a far more positive assessment of Antonelli’s weekend in Azerbaijan, offering the young Italian a much-needed boost after a difficult summer spell.
Antonelli’s rookie campaign had turned sour across the European rounds, where he collected just three points and endured some painful lows. The most glaring came at Zandvoort, where he collided with Charl, and at Monza, where a costly spin in FP2 prompted Wolff to label his performance “underwhelming” and urge him to rediscover his true potential.
In Baku, though, Antonelli finally found some redemption. He capitalized on a chaotic qualifying session to stick his Mercedes W16 fourth on the grid, then converted that into a steady P4 finish in the race itself. Given the doubts swirling around him in recent weeks, many wouldn’t have bet on him delivering such a composed drive under pressure. But Wolff made it clear afterward that he was satisfied, praising the way Antonelli seized the opportunity and proved he can hold his own when it matters most.
Wolff remarked, “It was a really good rebound after Monza. He had such a difficult spell with the European races, and coming here with a solid P4 and running at the front in the front group is something to continue to build on and consolidate, and then have more good weekends until the end of the year”. He added, “I think we always speak very openly with each other; there is no such thing as holding back. He was not meeting his own expectations with what happened in Monza, where the driving just wasn’t what he expected or wanted it to be. Maybe a bit was missing in ultimate performance that made the difference between a podium or not, but it was such a good consolidation, and in my opinion, it was important to score that result”.
Mercedes at a Crossroads: Between Ambition and Reality
Russell’s future, Verstappen’s threat, and Antonelli’s rise leave Mercedes at a crossroads. The team is climbing back, but whether this momentum turns into dominance or drama will define their next chapter.
Clearly, Mercedes faces a complex dilemma. On one hand, they have a talented young driver in George Russell, who has proven his ability and craves well-deserved recognition. On the other, they cannot ignore the allure of a superstar like Max Verstappen, who could guarantee a top-tier position for the team for years to come. And finally, they are nurturing another promising young talent in Kimi Antonelli, for whom Toto Wolff clearly has high hopes and favoritism.
Balancing the act of retaining a current talent, pursuing a potential superstar, and cultivating a new prodigy is a difficult task. The decisions Mercedes makes in the coming months will not only shape their driver lineup but will also profoundly impact their long-term strategy and competitiveness in the new era of Formula 1. Can Mercedes solve this challenging puzzle to create a dream team, or will internal tensions and indecision cause them to miss golden opportunities? The answer likely lies in the contract clauses that are, or are not, signed in the near future. And without a doubt, the Formula 1 world will be watching every move with curiosity and suspense.
