‘An amazing actor and a master of his craft’
Hollywood star Robert Redford has died aged 89, it has been announced.
The actor and director was best known for being the go-to leading man of the late 1960s and 1970s. He appeared in films including Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and The Sting.
However, on Tuesday morning (September 16), Robert sadly passed away at his home in Utah.

Robert Redford dies aged 89
In a statement, Robert’s representative announced that the actor had died. They told the New York Times: “Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah – the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved.
“He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy.”
As well as his acting credentials, Robert was also known for founding the Sundance Film Festival in Utah. He turned his hand to directing too, and bagged an Academy Award for best director in 1980 for Ordinary People.

When did Robert retire?
In 2018, Robert announced that after more than 60 years in the business, he planned to retire from acting.
“I’ve been doing it since I was 21. I thought, well, that’s enough,” he told Entertainment Weekly at the time.
Robert was married twice, with his first marriage to producer and activist Lola Van Wagenen lasting 27 years. The pair shared four children, one of whom sadly died in infancy. Robert and Lola then went on to divorce in 1985.
In 2009, Robert tied the knot again to longtime partner, artist Sibylle Szaggars.
Tributes pour in
Following the sad news of Robert’s death, tributes have poured in. On X, one person said: “This is terrible news. RIP Robert. He was an amazing actor and a master of his craft.”
Someone else added: “Robert Redford is gone but his legacy remains. Such a great and versatile actor and entertainer.”
A third also chimed in: “Devastated to hear the news of Robert Redford’s passing. Off the charts screen charisma, with a twinkle in his eye and a sensitivity that separated him from his contemporaries. Will always be grateful for Ordinary People.”
