Channel 4’s in depth documentary into the mysterious death of Lancashire teen Jay Slater sees his mum Debbie Duncan react to some of the most harrowing details of his case. The Disappearance of Jay Slater is set to air tonight, and will include interviews with Jay’s friends and family following the discovery of the 19-year-old’s body in Tenerife.

Jay had attended NRG music festival in the island’s Playa de las Americas in June 2024, but he left with two men he’d just met to head to a different part of the island. He last spoke to his friend Lucy Law at 8.50am on the morning of his disappearance, but his battery died and he was never seen again.

Rumours and conspiracies around what had happened to him were relentless after he went missing, with it taking months for his family to be given any answers. During the documentary, Debbie is filmed as she receives the toxicology report from the investigation into his death.

Preston Coroner’s officer Alice Swarbrick confirmed that there were traces of MDMA and cocaine in Jay’s body from the hours prior to his death. But although there was evidence of drugs in his system, it didn’t mean they contributed to the cause of his death.

Reeling from the news, Jay’s mum said: “He’s a young adult and that’s what they do when they go to festivals, it’s not a shock, it’s just upsetting,” adding that it was “upsetting the way he died.”

Jay’s heartbroken mum was told that the toxicology report had only been shared with her and wouldn’t appear anywhere else. But the documentary instantly cut to a string of YouTube videos, which shared screenshots of the toxicology report, stating Jay’s full name – Jay Dean Slater.

The documentary then shows that in March 2025, Spanish court documents were fraudulently leaked and published on YouTube. The caption adds: “Including Jay’s Spanish toxicology reports.”

Speaking on the documentary, Jay’s mum, Debbie Duncan, said: “It’s just another kick in the teeth, but how is it even allowed? Official court documents, talking about our son, it’s lawless, ain’t it? There’s nothing we can do, we’re just powerless.”

She continued: “I will never ever understand why social media detectives were destroying people’s lives. It’s been torture, absolute torture. The YouTubers and the TikTokers have made this situation 100x worse.”

One of the conspiracy theories related to a GoFundMe page, which was set up by Jay’s friend Lucy. Debbie explained: “Although Lucy couldn’t access the money, she thought it may help with people searching and accommodation costs but the money were going up and up and it just span out of control. Conspiracy theories of, ‘Jay’s lost an amount of drugs.’ YouTubers, TikTokers, it was all, ‘He’s been taken up into the mountains – he’s been kidnapped’.”

After she landed in Tenerife to help with the search, Debbie received a message from a troll, saying: “I’ll give you one warning your son won’t be coming back he owes us enough f***ing g money kiss goodbye to him.”

Debbie added: “It’s never-ending, the social media thing. YouTubers, TikTokers, the things they’re coming out with.”
