Max Verstappen’s debut at the Nürburgring: A Journey to the DMSB Permit License
Max Verstappen has long been known as one of the best drivers in Formula 1, often displaying an unparalleled combination of skill, speed, and daring on the track. However, recently, Verstappen made headlines for a different reason entirely: he ventured into the world of endurance racing at the iconic Nürburgring. The Dutch racing driver, who has dominated the Formula 1 landscape for years, was participating in the Nürburgring Langstrecken Series (NLS), where he was aiming to obtain the highly coveted DMSB Permit License, a requirement for racing in top-tier endurance events, such as the Nurburgring 24 Hours and other GT3 events.
This moment marked a departure from the usual Formula 1 circuits that Verstappen races on, as he faced the challenge of competing in a completely different racing environment. What unfolded over the weekend was a fascinating journey of both triumph and challenges, offering a glimpse into Verstappen’s versatility and his pursuit of further racing experiences.

The Road to the DMSB Permit License
To understand Verstappen’s journey over the weekend, it’s essential to know what the DMSB Permit License represents and why it’s so important. The DMSB, or the German Motor Sport Federation, requires drivers to obtain a specific permit to race on the Nürburgring Nordschleife (often referred to as the ‘Green Hell’), a challenging and treacherous circuit that has earned its reputation as one of the most demanding tracks in the world.
The Nurburgring Langstrecken Series (NLS) is a key part of the German motorsport scene, attracting endurance racing enthusiasts from around the world. However, to compete in these top-tier endurance races, such as the famed Nurburgring 24 Hours, drivers need to meet stringent licensing requirements. This includes passing a theory test and completing a series of laps around the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife to prove their skills in a variety of race conditions.
Verstappen, who is no stranger to the pressures of high-speed racing, took on the challenge head-on. On Friday, he arrived at the track and participated in a theory test designed to assess his knowledge of the complex Nürburgring rules and safety measures. Once that hurdle was cleared, he was given the green light to participate in the seventh round of the NLS series on Saturday.
The Test on Track
Verstappen’s racing debut at the Nürburgring involved a rather unusual vehicle for the Formula 1 star—a Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 CS. The car, which was specifically tuned for rookie drivers, featured a reduced power output, offering 125 brake horsepower less than the standard version of the 718 Cayman. With only 300 brake horsepower under the hood, Verstappen was driving a car with far less power than what he’s used to on the Formula 1 grid. His performance was immediately set up for comparison to the higher-powered cars around him, making the challenge even more daunting.
Despite the limitations of the car, Verstappen impressed everyone with his performance in qualifying. The weather on the day of qualifying was wet, making the track conditions even more challenging. However, Verstappen’s adaptability showed as he managed to qualify in P6, a remarkable feat considering the considerable gap between his car and the top-tier machines in the field. His time in qualifying was 15.3 seconds off the top time of the class, which might sound like a significant gap, but in context, it’s important to note that Verstappen’s car had much less horsepower. To make matters more interesting, Verstappen was racing in the Cup 3G class, where Porsche Caymans were detuned from 425 to 300 horsepower, further compounding his challenge.
Despite this disadvantage, Verstappen’s performance was solid. He may have been outpaced by cars with far superior power and speed, but the fact that he still managed to qualify well shows his innate ability behind the wheel. His real challenge, however, came later in the race.
A Challenging Race
As expected, Verstappen struggled to keep up with the faster competitors in the race. The higher-powered cars around him quickly overtook him as the race unfolded, and Verstappen found himself unable to defend his position from the onslaught of competitors. However, even though he was at a distinct disadvantage in terms of power, Verstappen was still able to complete the mandatory 14 laps required to obtain his DMSB permit.
However, a bit of bad luck struck Verstappen during the race. While he was able to complete the laps in one car, the other car, which was crucial for fulfilling the double star requirements, sustained damage during qualifying. This meant that Verstappen was unable to race in the second car, which put him at risk of not fulfilling the conditions needed to receive the full DMSB permit license.
A Surprising Outcome
Despite the fact that Verstappen did not fully meet all the official requirements due to the damaged car, the DMSB committee ultimately reviewed his case. They decided to grant Verstappen the license anyway, acknowledging the fact that he had still completed the required laps and had done so under challenging conditions.
In his comments after the race, Verstappen expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, noting that the experience had been enjoyable. As quoted by Motorsport.com, Verstappen said: “I’m happy that everything went smoothly and that I obtained a DMSB permit life. I had fun, but that’s always the case here. It was also good to drive those stints in race conditions with traffic, so both faster and slower cars. There was a code 60 neutralization, double yellows and yellow flags. I drove in the rain, on a dry track, and in between. I learned where there is more a nest script and did a start as well. It was nice to gain more experience on this circuit.”
With the DMSB permit in hand, Verstappen is now authorized to participate in the Nürburgring Endurance Series or even in the iconic Nürburgring 24 Hours in the future, driving a GT3 car. It is possible that Verstappen could make his debut in the series as early as September 27th, during the ninth round of the NLS, which takes place between F1’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix and the Singapore Grand Prix. This opportunity seems ripe for Verstappen, and given his dedication to obtaining the permit, it would not be surprising if he participated in the event.

A New Chapter for Verstappen
Verstappen’s journey into endurance racing and his quest for the DMSB permit license serves as a reminder of his hunger for success and desire to expand his racing experiences. While he is already a dominant force in Formula 1, his willingness to compete in different formats of racing highlights his versatility and determination to push his limits further. The Nürburgring debut could be just the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Verstappen outside of F1, and it will be interesting to see how he fares in future endurance events.
In the world of motorsport, there are few drivers who have the same mix of talent and ambition as Verstappen. His Nürburgring debut is a testament to his skill behind the wheel, and his ability to tackle new challenges head-on. Whether he competes in future NLS races or takes on the legendary Nürburgring 24 Hours, one thing is clear: Verstappen is ready to continue his legacy as a driver who pushes the boundaries of what is possible in motorsport.
The future certainly looks bright for Verstappen, and we can’t wait to see what he achieves next.
