The Azerbaijan Grand Prix is always renowned for its surprises and drama, but this year’s event witnessed a level of chaos that was particularly acute for the McLaren team. With a meager six points, it was the team’s worst performance of the season, even dipping below their 12-point haul in Canada. However, behind those cold numbers lies a series of incredible stories, from Oscar Piastri’s unexpected accident and Carlos Sainz’s unique celebration to George Russell’s resilient performance while battling illness. This was more than just a race; it was a vivid tableau of pressure, resilience, and rare, humanizing moments in the high-speed world of Formula 1.

Piastri’s Ordeal: Stranded on a Track to Nowhere
Oscar Piastri’s incident at Turn 5 was one of McLaren’s most forgettable highlights in Baku. While Lando Norris collided with him from behind, it was Piastri who became the center of attention as he found himself stuck mid-track after the crash. Unlike typical accidents, Piastri couldn’t easily return to the Paddock. Although he was able to sit in a marshal’s chair, watching the race on a phone kindly provided by a track official, the journey back was a monumental challenge.
The crash site was nearly a kilometer away from the Paddock. With no medical car dispatched due to the non-severe nature of the impact, Piastri was completely isolated. His team, including his press officer Sophie and his security guard, desperately tried to establish contact and retrieve him. They even reached out to the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile), but even the governing body lacked a clear protocol for handling such a situation in that specific part of the circuit. It was a stark reminder that F1, despite being a global sport, can still have logistical blind spots in unexpected situations.
Ultimately, Piastri had to walk back. This might sound simple, but for an F1 driver in full race gear, walking through the streets of Baku is an unimaginable and risky endeavor. Fortunately, the streets were relatively empty during the race. He required the help of his security guard, who had to plead for a tabard from a marshal just to get into the “moat” area (the space between the track fence and the crowd fence). The kilometer-long journey, which took him past luxury Lamborghini dealerships, was undoubtedly an unforgettable experience for Piastri. The image of an F1 driver, head down in his race suit, walking along a Baku city street, is perhaps one of the most surreal and humanizing moments F1 fans have ever witnessed. His trek concluded by passing through an under-track tunnel to reach the Paddock, where he immediately faced a barrage of questions from journalists, ending a grueling 30-minute ordeal.
Carlos Sainz: A One-of-a-Kind Celebration and a Unique Trophy
In stark contrast to McLaren’s disappointment, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz had an outstanding day, securing a spot on the podium. Notably, this was his first podium with his new team, achieved even earlier than Lewis Hamilton’s with Mercedes, if you exclude the Sprint race win in China. After the press conference, Sainz returned to celebrate with his team. But what surprised many was the sight of Pier Luigi, Carlos’s trainer, holding a fire extinguisher!
It turns out this unique “tradition” originated in Bahrain in 2024, when the team couldn’t find champagne to celebrate and ingeniously used a fire extinguisher as a substitute. The moment Gigi brought out the fire extinguisher for the team photo brought laughter to everyone. Afterward, they continued the celebration with real champagne, making sure to drench Williams Team Principal James Vowles, who was also present. The question now is whether this fire extinguisher will become a special “mascot” for Carlos Sainz’s future podiums.
Beyond the special celebration, Sainz’s trophy also carried a deep, personal meaning. On his helmet, and also on the trophy itself, was a special sticker designed by Thea, a young super-fan from the UK. It was a wonderful gesture to honor the love and support of the fans. Although Carlos and James Vowles were “reeking of champagne” after the festivities, they had no time to shower immediately and had to return to the Marriott hotel to prepare for an early flight. This was also James Vowles’ first podium as a team principal, and he received a thoughtful gift from Mercedes’ Toto Wolff, a gesture that highlighted the respect between teams.

George Russell: Overcoming Illness to Seize Second Place
Mercedes’ George Russell endured a challenging weekend as he battled illness. With a hoarse voice on Saturday and his health clearly compromised, Russell arrived at the track as late as possible on both days. Some F1 insiders even speculated he might have had COVID-19, though this was never confirmed. However, despite the physical difficulties, Russell displayed immense mental fortitude and exceptional skill to clinch an impressive second place on Sunday.
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix is one of the most demanding races on the calendar, requiring intense focus and physical stamina. That Russell could achieve such a result while unwell is a testament to his resilience and talent. On the podium, he didn’t leap for joy but maintained a calm demeanor, clearly exhausted but deeply satisfied. In the end, he was so drained that he left the hotel still in his race suit, too tired to change before heading home.
A charming detail about Russell was the moment he stopped to play with a stray cat before Saturday’s practice session. This revealed a gentle and approachable side to the F1 drivers, who are often seen as intensely serious and focused. This image, along with other stories of stray cats in the Paddock, became one of the most shared moments on social media, proving that even small, adorable details can capture the hearts of F1 fans.
Max Verstappen: An Unstoppable Performance and Family Joy
Max Verstappen continued to assert his dominance with a convincing victory in Azerbaijan. Following a stellar qualifying performance, he delivered a masterclass in driving for the fans on Sunday. The Red Bull team’s celebration in Pit Lane is always a notable event, but this time, the presence of Max’s mother and aunt (Jos Verstappen’s mother and sister) made the ceremony even more special. They were allowed to leave the celebration before the “Red Bull” was sprayed, offering a warm moment of family affection in the hyper-competitive world of F1.

Sideline Stories: High Winds, Stray Cats, and Strict Rules
This year’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix also featured unexpected events due to the weather. Strong winds on Saturday caused an incident where several umbrellas were knocked over, nearly causing injuries. The advertising hoardings along the fences also had to be rolled up because they were acting like sails in the wind. Even one of the large “1-2-3” blocks used for the podium positions was blown away. Luckily, a quick-thinking staff member named Katie managed to grab it and return it to its spot.
Another humorous story came from the national anthem ceremony. The drivers, including Max Verstappen, couldn’t contain their laughter as they watched the children at the front sing the anthem with such fervent and overwhelming enthusiasm that it was “hilariously” endearing. It was a rare moment of relaxation and amusement for the drivers before the immense pressure of the race.
Alongside the fun, there was also a stern warning from the organizers. A woman, along with her husband and daughter, was ejected from the circuit for attempting to sneak into the media pen without a pass. This served as a reminder that security rules at F1 events are incredibly strict, and any violations will be dealt with accordingly.
This year’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix was more than just an F1 race; it was a multicolored tapestry of human stories, extraordinary efforts, humorous moments, and stringent regulations. From McLaren’s disaster to the joys of victory, every detail contributed to creating an unforgettable weekend in Baku.
