A psychotherapist has weighed in on Nicola Peltz’s decision to exclude the Beckham family from her vow renewal with Brooklyn, suggesting it was a ‘strategic’ move driven by a ‘desire for control’

Nicola Peltz and Brooklyn Beckham’s decision to exclude his entire family from their secret vow renewal shows a ‘desire for control’, an expert has said.

Brooklyn’s parents, David Beckham, 50 and Victoria Beckham, 51, are believed to have been left devastated when they found out about the secret vow renewal ceremony amid ongoing rumours of a family feud.

The couple, who first wed in 2022, married again on August 2 in Westchester County. Nicola wore her mother’s 1985 wedding gown, while her billionaire father Nelson officiated the ceremony. It comes after David, 50, made a huge gesture on social media towards son Brooklyn amid the family rift.

No members of the Beckham family were present, with relatives reportedly learning of the event from a US website instead of being told. Brooklyn’s absence from David’s 50th birthday had already fuelled talk of a rift, but sources claim this latest move “was the final kick in the teeth for David and Victoria.”

An insider has claimed that it’s the final straw for David and his wife Victoria after they were left heartbroken to find out about it on the news rather than Brooklyn himself.

“Seeing Nelson having such a pivotal role at the ceremony was heartbreaking for David especially. Not one member of the 30-plus extended family knew about the wedding, or were invited. His grandparents are devastated too as Brooklyn has always been so close to them,” a source has said.

“It feels cruel and spiteful. This is no longer a game. It has gone beyond all that. This is a family who feel they have lost their precious boy – and see no way back.

“Honestly, they are now questioning why he even wants to keep the ‘Beckham’ surname – will he revert to Peltz? August 2nd 2025 – is this the day Brooklyn formally declared himself no longer a part of the Beckham family? It certainly feels like it,” the source told The Sun.

Not only were Brooklyn’ s parents David and Victoria left in the dark, but so too were his three siblings Cruz, Harper and Romeo, as well as his grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles.

However, psychotherapist Kamalyn Kaur has suggested that it may not be all perfect in Brooklyn and Nicola’s relationship. The expert told Femail that a couple renewing their vows shortly after marriage may be seeking a fresh start following a rough patch.

“If someone’s had a bit of hardship after their marriage, they might want to just do a little bit of a reset,” she explained. “Especially if there’s been tension, or there have been life changes or external pressure, which I think in this case, probably applies.”

According to Kaur, vow renewals can serve as “a symbolic reset” and a way to reconnect with the original spirit of the marriage. “It can also be a couple’s way of creating a new shared memory that reflects the couple’s current identity, rather than a version of themselves which was present at their original wedding.”

Commenting on rumours that the Beckham family were excluded from the event, Kaur said this might point to “deeper fractures and unresolved conflicts.”

“Excluding family, any kind of family, from an important event can suggest a desire for control over this narrative,” she said.

“It’s also signifying that there’s like a conflict here, they’re saying, ‘we don’t want you to be a part of this new chapter and we are choosing to exclude you,’ so it’s almost like a form of protest or retaliation.”

While not necessarily healthy, she clarified: “It is an act of boundary setting.”

Brooklyn and Nicola had only been married three years before renewing their vows on August 2. Speaking about the ceremony at the weekend, Brooklyn said: “We just wanted a really beautiful experience – a really cute memory.”

“To be honest, I could renew my vows every single day with her. I think the most important thing that someone can do is find that person that they’re going to spend the rest of their life with. It definitely shapes you as a person. Yeah, it was really, really cute. It was really fun.”
