In the high-octane world of Formula 1, where victory is measured in milliseconds and fortunes can turn with a single corner, complacency is a luxury no team can afford. This lesson is one McLaren may be learning the hard way. Fresh off the triumphant celebration of their second consecutive constructor’s championship, a dark horse is emerging from the shadows, threatening to snatch away the ultimate prize. That challenger is none other than Max Verstappen, whose late-season title push has just received a terrifying and potentially game-changing boost. Red Bull Racing has confirmed that despite the season drawing to a close, they are not done yet, with another significant upgrade scheduled for their ever-evolving RB21 challenger.

The narrative of the 2025 season has been one of fierce competition and shifting momentums. For much of the year, Verstappen and Red Bull wrestled with a temperamental machine, a car that showed flashes of brilliance but often lacked the consistency to challenge the dominant papaya-orange cars of McLaren. However, the tides have begun to turn dramatically. With blistering, back-to-back victories in Monza and Baku, the tenacious Dutchman has clawed his way back from the brink, reigniting a championship battle that many believed was all but over. While he still sits as the statistical underdog in the standings, his hard-fought second-place finish in Singapore—crucially, ahead of title rivals Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris—has allowed him to nibble further into their points advantage, continuing a surge in form that has sent a wave of anxiety through the McLaren camp.
This resurgence is no accident. It is the product of relentless, painstaking work behind the scenes at the Milton Keynes factory. The RB21, once a source of frustration, is finally beginning to dance to Verstappen’s rhythm. The steady stream of progress has been confirmed by Technical Director Pierre Walsh, who revealed that while no new components would appear at the upcoming United States Grand Prix, more performance-enhancing upgrades are firmly in the pipeline before the final checkered flag of the season. “We will have other stuff coming, not the next Grand Prix, maybe a little bit later,” Walsh stated, a calm but ominous warning to their rivals.
This strategy of continuous development flies in the face of conventional wisdom. Across the grid, development has slowed to a crawl since the F1 summer break. Most teams, including the triumphant McLaren, have pivoted their focus and resources towards preparing their 2026 machines, designed to comply with a sweeping new set of regulations. Red Bull, however, is bucking the trend, choosing to remain rooted in the present fight. When questioned about this seemingly risky approach, which could compromise their 2026 preparations, Walsh offered a candid insight into the team’s unique philosophy. “We compromised a little bit at the beginning of the year, but with the way we work, every time it’s like that. We’re a little late in development, a little late finalizing the next car. It’s the way our system works, and we take the benefit of it this year.”

This relentless pursuit of victory in the current season is driven by a deep-seated competitive spirit. Walsh emphasized that even with the drivers’ title being the main focus, the team has not given up on the constructor’s standings. “Clearly, the constructor’s championship is not finished for us. It’s very important,” he asserted, highlighting the team’s goal to beat Ferrari and Mercedes to the coveted runner-up position. “With the philosophy of this team, with every race we participate in this championship, we never give anything away.”
This aggressive, late-season push presents a fascinating subplot: the monumental task of simultaneously developing a title-contending car while also launching the team’s first-ever in-house power unit in collaboration with Ford for 2026. When pressed on whether this dual focus might hamper their future prospects, Walsh was resolute, explaining that the current upgrades were developed “a long time in advance.” The risk, it seems, has been calculated and deemed worth taking.
Meanwhile, at McLaren, the mood is one of cautious optimism mixed with a palpable sense of threat. McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown has made it clear that despite sealing the constructor’s crown with six races to spare, the team will not alter its approach to the drivers’ title fight. Under their “papaya rules,” both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are free to race, provided they keep it clean. This policy was tested in Singapore, where Norris’s bold move to snatch third place from his teammate reignited speculation about whether the no-team-orders stance can truly last under the mounting pressure from Verstappen.
Brown remains unequivocal. “McLaren’s philosophy isn’t changing,” he declared. “While we’d like it to solely come down to our two guys, Max is still very much in the game… We’re just going to keep doing what we’re doing.”

However, behind the confident facade, Team Principal Andrea Stella struck a more cautious tone. During a team event, his response to the plan for the rest of the season was telling. He acknowledged the looming threat of Verstappen and Red Bull’s momentum. “We certainly don’t take our foot off the accelerator pedal,” Stella stated. “The objective is to finish P1 and P2, [but we have to] push back Verstappen, who is always there. Whatever you do, he is always there. So yeah, that’s the mission.”
The secret to Red Bull’s revival isn’t just one single component. Verstappen himself admitted in Singapore that while a new floor has played its part, it’s not the sole reason for their newfound pace. He hinted at two crucial factors: the team now starts race weekends with a much stronger baseline setup, and more importantly, they have become masters at finding and maintaining the RB21’s notoriously narrow operating window. Advisor Helmut Marko elaborated, crediting the real breakthrough to operational improvements and a shift in philosophy. “Our engineers are experienced, and Max is an experienced driver as well,” Marko explained. “We rely on them a lot more than we did before. We don’t blindly follow what the numbers tell us anymore.”
This blend of engineering prowess, strategic daring, and a driver at the peak of his powers has created a perfect storm. As the Formula 1 circus heads into its final act, the championship battle is poised on a knife’s edge. McLaren, the celebrated champions, now find themselves looking over their shoulder at the charging bull. The question on everyone’s mind is whether Red Bull’s final gamble will pay off, allowing Max Verstappen to steal the driver’s title in what would be one of the most dramatic and unforgettable upsets in recent Formula 1 history.
