Gervonta Davis avoids a rematch with Lamont Roach and Shakur Stevenson shows him up

Gervonta Davis finds himself at the center of controversy following his draw against Lamont Roach Jr. as he declares he won’t grant him a rematch immediately, much to the ire of Shakur Stevenson.

It a result that many believe should have gone in Roach’s favor, particularly after Tank took a knee in the ninth round, although he claimed that was due to grease getting in his eyes from his hair braids.

Although Roach moved up a division and delivered a career-defining performance which took away Davis’ perfect record in the process, the 30-year-old Tank retained his WBA lightweight title and is quickly keen to move on.

And when pressed about the possibility of an immediate boxing rematch to settle the score for good, Gervonta appeared hesitant as he insists a rematch will not be his next fight.

“Uh, I’m not sure, bro,” Davis told media after the contest. “Uh, I’m definitely not sure.

“But hopefully we could get it before, and it probably won’t be this year.”

But as speculation over a rematch swirled, another major player stepped into the equation: Shakur Stevenson, who is coming into the picture full of confidence after stopping Josh Hadley on the undercard of Dmitry Bivol vs Arthur Beterbiev.

Stevenson has been a boxing champion since he claimed the featherweight WBO belt back in 2019 and has gone on to then claim titles at super-featherweight and now reigns as the lightweight champion.

But the WBC champion isn’t actually advocating for himself to step in against Davis just yet as the 27-year-old, with a 23-0-0 record, challenges Roach Jr. himself for a shot at the other lightweight title.
