The long-reigning WBC Heavyweight Champion was at one stage knocking out all comers, having built up a record of 39 stoppages from 40 fights before coming up against Tyson Fury.

The pair of heavyweights first fought to a draw, but Fury would hand Wilder his first two losses inside the distance in fight two and three.

‘The Bronze Bomber’ took a year out of the ring before beating Robert Helenius in the first round, but another 14 months of inactivity followed. He was then upset by Joseph Parker over the distance and, in a fight he admitted could be his last, knocked out by Zhilei Zhang six months later.

A low-level comeback fight pencilled in for April was recently scrapped, leaving many in the sport feeling that the devastating puncher from Tuscaloosa, Alabama could move off quietly into retirement.

Speaking to Space Port Sweden, coach and close personal friend to Wilder, Malik Scott, said in no uncertain terms that the former champion will be fighting again.

“Fighting is in Deontay’s heart. He’ll fight again. Deontay will fight again. He just moves on his own terms and does things how he wants to do them.

“Especially when it comes to the business aspect of things because like I said he doesn’t need this, so he ain’t going to do it if all the terms are not right.

“He’s still Deontay Wilder. He’s still big time boxing and people still want to see him. He’ll fight again.”

Whether or not Wilder will attempt a low-key comeback before chasing big fights remains to be seen, however Scott did mention both Francis Ngannou and Anthony Joshua as potential opponents.
