Boxing great Muhammad Ali once had his say on a fantasy fight against Mike Tyson.
Best known by his alias ‘The Greatest’, Ali’s incredible legacy lives on in the present day having enjoyed a glittering professional career which lasted just over 20-years.
His crowning moment came in February 1964 when he defeated Sonny Liston via 6th-round stoppage to capture the world heavyweight championship for the first time in his tenure.
Ali successfully defended his crown 11 times, including a rematch victory over Liston, as well as wins against the likes of Floyd Patterson and Henry Cooper. ‘The Greatest’ suffered his first career defeat against Joe Frazier when they fought in March 1971, although he would go on to get revenge over ‘Smokin Joe’ in their second and third contests in 1974 and 1975.
One fighter who burst onto the scene after Ali had retired from the sport is ‘Iron’ Mike, with many fans and pundits left wondering over the years what would have happened if the heavyweight icons had locked horns.
In a resurfaced interview on YouTube, Ali was asked to give an honest opinion of ‘Iron’ Mike.
“Awesome. He’s powerful and he’s strong. He’s got a big punch. If he hits you, you’re in trouble.”
He was then asked to predict the outcome of a fantasy fight between the pair and backed himself to finish the fight in the tenth round.
“Stick and move. Hit and run. Tire him out. After about round 10, move in.”
Tyson made a sensational return to boxing last November when he fought YouTube sensation turned professional fighter Jake Paul at the AT&T Stadium in Texas. At 58-years-old, ‘Iron’ Mike was quite clearly past his formidable best, as he fell short to ‘The Problem Child’ over eight controversial rounds in his first professional outing in just under 20-years.
