Dallas Cowboys superstar linebacker Micah Parsons is reportedly seeking a record-setting payday that could very well be too rich for owner Jerry Jones.

The polarizing Cowboys owner has a peculiar habit of waiting until the last minute to work out contract extensions with his top players. Parsons was eligible for a new deal last year, but Jones’ decision to drag it on means he’ll have to sign off on a record-setting deal to retain his franchise star.

According to a report from Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News, the four-time Pro Bowler “is expected to ask for a $200 million contract extension.” Such a deal would make Micah Parsons the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history,

The report states that Parsons’ camp had “preliminary discussions” with Dallas’ front office during the NFL Scouting Combine. Additionally, Parsons and Jones recently “had extensive talks”, per Watkins.

Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase just signed a four-year extension worth $161 million to make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Chase’s deal narrowly surpassed Myles Garrett’s four-year, $160 million extension he signed with the Cleveland Browns.

Jones waited until August and September to finalize extensions with CeeDee Lamb ($136 million) and Dak Prescott ($240 million), respectively. Had Jones prioritized extensions with them a year earlier, he would have paid far less.

The longer this drags on, the more money Micah Parsons will secure. That also means Parsons’ future with Dallas is in question, seeing how Jones operates as the general manager these days.

Garrett just got $160 million from Cleveland, and he’s four years older than Parsons. The latter has 52.5 sacks and nine forced fumbles over his first four seasons (63 games), so of course he’s deserving of $200 million-plus.

If Jones won’t give Parsons the money, another team will. And whoever gives Parsons that record-setting deal will not regret it in the slightest.
